In 1610, Galileo, an Italian scientist, started to publish his scientific findings.  Galileo’s findings supported Copernicus’ conclusion that the sun was the center of the universe and that the earth revolved around the sun (heliocentric model).  Galileo's discoveries caused an uproar.  Many scholars attacked him because his observations contradicted ancient views (Ptolemy's geocentric model) about the world.  The Church condemned him because he challenged the Christian teaching that the heavens were fixed, unmoving, and perfect.  In 1633, Galileo was ordered to appear before the Inquisition (a Catholic Court to punish heretics).

Threatened with death unless he withdrew his "heresies," Galileo agreed to publicly state that the Earth stood motionless at the center of the universe.  "Nevertheless," he is said to have muttered as he left the court, "it does move."

Imagine you are visiting Galileo the night before the trial.  What words of encouragement or advice could you give your friend?  You may write your own or find a quote online (remember to quote the author).

Galileo, "Always continue the climb. It is possible for you to do whatever you choose, if you first get to know who you are and are willing to work with a power that is greater than ourselves to do it."-(Ella Wheeler Wilcox) Don't back down, and stay strong! Make sure you, "Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you."-(Thomas Jefferson.)

If I had the chance i would tell Galileo that what he was doing was right, and to continue his studies. Because of what he found out he made a major turning point in science. Even though the church is against what he said, if i were with Galileo i would tell him to go off somewhere in Europe where he could study in peace and not have to worry about the church. Somewhere where he could talk to fellow scientists and help keep on learning instead of just stopping and not being allowed to continue making progress and re-writing history and science. That is what i would tell Galileo.
